Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews: how to track your brand in both

TL;DR

To track your brand in Google AI Mode and in AI Overviews, run the same questions in both every day, and store each answer apart. On 30 October 2026, one question of our project got 409 words and 9 sources in AI Mode. Its AI Overview had 194 words and 6 sources, with no URL in common. In the 28 days to that day, a different tool led each feature, both at 36% of its answers. Read them as two rows of one report.

On this page

Google answers a search twice. An AI Overview sits above the results, and AI Mode answers in a tab of its own. A marketing manager who reports AI visibility asks whether one number covers both, and which tools record the second. This guide pairs the two answers to one question of our own project, and reads their citations apart. It then shows how to report the two features side by side. Which tool monitors Google AI Overviews defines the two features and compares them with ChatGPT. For the manual check of one search, read how to check your brand in Google AI Overviews. For what Google itself says about the two, read Google's guidance on AI Overviews and AI Mode.

How do you track your brand in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews?

You track your brand in Google AI Mode and AI Overviews as two platforms. Ask each buyer question in each feature every day, and store what each returned. The two features return different text and different sources for the same question, as the next two sections measure. A tool therefore keeps two rows for Google, not one. Each stored answer keeps its day and its market. Which AI search engines matter counts the failed attempts of the two features. The next section shows how far the market moved one prompt's citations.

What does the same question return in AI Mode and in an AI Overview?

The same question gets a longer answer with more sources in AI Mode, and a shorter list in an AI Overview. We paired the two answers of 30 October 2026 to one prompt of our project. The prompt reads "What is the best tool to monitor Google AI Overviews for my brand?", and it ran worldwide in English.

The AI Mode answer had two headed sections, a comparison table and three questions back to the user. The AI Overview was one list of five tools, then a list of four things such tools measure. Three tools appeared in both answers. The two answers shared no cited URL, and two cited domains. How to check your brand in Google AI Overviews reads the 28 AI Overviews to this prompt, with their cited pages.

Over the 28 days to 30 October 2026, the prompt got 28 AI Mode answers too, with 201 citations. 18 of the 28 named one of the five monitored tools. The prompt ran from Ireland until 14 October 2026, 12 answers, and worldwide after that, 16 answers. From Ireland, an AI Mode answer cited 4 pages on average. Worldwide, it cited 9. The AI Overviews to the same prompt moved less: 7 pages from Ireland, 9 worldwide.

How do the citations differ between AI Mode and AI Overviews?

At the level of the URL, AI Overviews cite home pages more often than AI Mode. All four of their most cited URLs have no path, against one in AI Mode. Which AI search engines matter compares the two features by answer and by domain. The table below reads the 28 days to 30 October 2026. The project's 47 active questions ran in both features, in English. The project pauses its other questions, so they returned nothing in the window.

  • AI Overviews cite the home page. Their four most cited URLs were youtube.com, reddit.com, linkedin.com and semrush.com, each with no path. In AI Mode, only reddit.com reached the four without a path.
  • A brand's own site ranks differently in each. Profound's site was the 6th most cited domain in AI Mode and the 18th in AI Overviews. Otterly AI's site was the 11th in AI Mode, with 93 citations, and the 12th in AI Overviews, with 101.

How do you read AI Mode and AI Overviews in one report?

Read them as two platforms with a row each. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, a different tool led each feature. Profound led AI Mode, with a mention in 473 of its 1,309 answers, 36%. Otterly AI led AI Overviews, with a mention in 470 of its 1,302 answers, also 36%. In the same window, Profound had 465 mentions in AI Overviews, and Otterly AI had 395 in AI Mode. One Google row would add them: 938 for Profound, 865 for Otterly AI. Otterly AI's lead in AI Overviews would not show. Three reads per platform cover it:

  1. Visibility. One row for AI Mode and one for AI Overviews, next to ChatGPT and the rest.
  2. The most-named competitors. The leader differs by feature, as the two counts above show.
  3. The sources, with your own site among them. The citations section shows how the two features differ.

Which tools track Google AI Mode?

The table below prices each compared plan for Google AI Mode alone, with the price of one prompt. A row without a price states why: the plan does not track AI Mode, or sells it on Enterprise only. Tick more platforms to see the price change. Every rival figure carries the day we read it. Which tool monitors Google AI Overviews holds the coverage table. It shows how each entry plan sells AI Overviews and AI Mode: included, included if picked, or an add-on.

The table opens with Google AI Mode selected. Change the selection to the platforms you need. Prices are monthly, on monthly billing, for one market. A market is a country, or Worldwide. On FullReach AI, a prompt counts once for each market it runs in. Other tools can count markets differently. Each rival price comes from the pricing pages in its entry, read on the date in its row. Ahrefs sells checks: one prompt, asked once, on one platform. Each of its rows uses the cheapest package for that many prompts on the platforms here, and extra checks cost extra. AthenaHQ and Rankscale sell credits, so their entries state their prices instead.

FullReach AI runs both Google features on every plan, with five further AI platforms. FullReach AI costs 65€, 165€ and 360€ a month, billed yearly, for 50, 150 and 350 prompts, with every platform included.

What to do next

  1. Run one buyer question in AI Mode and in a normal Google search, in a private window. Note the brands and the sources of each.
  2. Compare the two results. If they differ, give each feature a row in your report.
  3. Start a tool that runs both features every day on a fixed set of questions. Our guide on how many prompts to track explains the count.

For how FullReach AI collects the answers, read the methodology.
