TL;DR
For one question, a signed-out browser with your market set shows today's AI Overview from one country. It keeps no record of yesterday or of another market. The best AI Overview tool for a daily record is a tracker, which stores every Overview to your questions. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, our tracker asked 47 questions. It stored an Overview on 25 to 28 of those days for each one. Search Console reports only your own pages.
On this page
A marketing manager asks this after a colleague saw a rival named above the search results, and not the manager's brand. This guide shows three ways to check: a browser, Search Console and a tracker, with what each one can and cannot tell you. The tracker numbers come from our own project, on Google AI Overviews alone, in the 28 days to 30 October 2026. The Search Console numbers cover the 90 days to 29 October 2026.
AI Mode, Google's chat tab, answers the same question differently, so check it apart with the same steps. Our guide on AI Mode versus AI Overviews holds one query in both features and the tools that track each. Our guide on which AI search engines matter places the two Google features beside ChatGPT, Perplexity and the others. For what Google itself says about appearing in them, read our summary of the Search Central guidance. Our guide on monitoring Google AI Overviews compares the tools that track them, and what each one records.
Which is the best AI Overview tool: a browser, Search Console or a tracker?
Each one answers a different question. A signed-out browser shows today's Overview to one search from one country. A tracker stores the Overviews to a set of questions every day. Search Console reports your own pages, and the section on it shows what it gave us. An AI Overview is the summary that Google writes above the normal results for some searches, with the pages it drew on beside it.
| Way | It answers | It cannot answer |
|---|---|---|
| A browser, signed out | Did Google show an AI Overview for this search, today, from here, and did it name us? | What it showed yesterday, or in another country. |
| Search Console | Which of our pages got impressions and clicks, for which queries, at which position. | Whether any of our 235 impressions stood under an AI Overview. |
| A tracker | How often the AI Overviews to a set of questions name each brand, every day, per market. | Anything about a question you did not add. |
A browser returns one Overview, and nobody stores it. The tracker asked 47 buying questions about AI visibility tools on Google AI Overviews, in English. It asked them every day of the 28 days to 30 October 2026. It stored an AI Overview on 25 to 28 of the 28 days for each question, and on every day for 39 of the 47. No Overview named our brand.
How do you check an AI Overview by hand?
Check one question in a browser, and you see the AI Overview as a buyer sees it today:
- Open a private window, signed out of Google, so no history shapes the result.
- Set the location in Google's settings to the country your buyers search from.
- Type one question a buyer asks, without your brand name in it.
- Note whether Google showed an AI Overview. For our 47 questions, it showed one on 25 to 28 of the 28 days.
- Note each brand the Overview names, in order, and open the pages at its side.
- Repeat the search tomorrow, and note what changed.
The check records one day, one country and one search. The next section shows what the same question returned over 28 days.
The manual check reads one question a day, and the free checker reads ten of your buyers' questions at once.
No account. Ten questions on three AI platforms.
What does a daily check of one question show?
A daily check of one question shows how the named brands and the cited pages change from day to day. Our tracker asks "What is the best AI visibility tool?" on Google each day, in English. The question ran from Ireland until 14 October 2026 and worldwide after. From 3 to 30 October 2026, Google showed an AI Overview on each of the 28 days.
| The 28 AI Overviews to one question | Count |
|---|---|
| Days with an AI Overview | 28 of 28 |
| Days that named at least one of the five monitored rivals | 25 of 28 |
| Days that named our brand | 0 of 28 |
| Monitored rivals named on one day | 0 on 3 days, 2 on 6 days, 3 on 18 days, 5 on 1 day |
| Pages cited on one day | 3 to 11 |
| Citations in all | 189, of 69 pages on 44 domains |
| Most cited domain | youtube.com, 33 citations in 23 Overviews |
| Citations of a monitored rival's own site | 3 of 189, from two of the five sites |
| Citations that gave a domain with no page path | 80 of 189 |
The three days with no monitored rival were 7, 9 and 13 October, all from Ireland. From Ireland, 9 of the 12 Overviews named a rival. Worldwide, all 16 did. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, across all 47 questions, the Overviews from Ireland named a rival in 283 of 555 cases, 51%. In the same 28 days, the worldwide Overviews named one in 402 of 747 cases, 54%. Roundups are pages that rank or compare several tools. From 3 to 30 October 2026, roundups took 119 of the 189 citations to this question, 63%.
The AI Overview of 30 October 2026 named five tools, three of them monitored, and cited seven pages. Five of the seven page titles held the word "Best". Six of the seven citations gave a domain with no page path. A tracker keeps every one of these answers, so each number opens into the Overview it counts.

Does Search Console show AI Overviews?
No. Our guide on monitoring Google AI Overviews holds what the Performance report counts. Our summary of Google's guidance holds what Google's help says about it.
For our own site, in the 90 days to 29 October 2026, 20 queries with the words "AI Overview" brought 235 impressions and no click. The largest, "best ai overview tool", had 121 impressions at an average position of 87. One question, "how do i choose the right ai overview tool for my brand?", showed at position 10, with 3 impressions. The report does not say whether any of those impressions stood under an AI Overview.
Search Console has one use for this check: its queries are the questions to track. Our guide on a prompt set from Search Console turns the query list into prompts.
What does one tracked question on AI Overviews cost?
Peec AI, Otterly AI and Ahrefs Brand Radar sell Google AI Overviews in euros, at 0.41€ to 1.93€ for one prompt a month. The cheapest of those plans, Otterly AI Lite, costs 29€ a month for 15 prompts. The table opens with Google AI Overviews selected. Change the selection to the platforms you need. Prices are monthly, on monthly billing, for one market. A market is a country, or Worldwide. On FullReach AI, a prompt counts once for each market it runs in. Other tools can count markets differently. Each rival price comes from the pricing pages in its entry, read on the date in its row. Ahrefs sells checks: one prompt, asked once, on one platform. Each of its rows uses the cheapest package for that many prompts on the platforms here, and extra checks cost extra. AthenaHQ and Rankscale sell credits, so their entries state their prices instead.
Our pricing guide explains the units the tools sell: prompts, credits and checks. FullReach AI asks 7 platforms, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode among them. FullReach AI costs 65€, 165€ and 360€ a month, billed yearly, for 50, 150 and 350 prompts, with every platform included.

What does a weekly routine look like?
A weekly routine reads the stored Overviews once, and acts on one cited page:
- Open the tracker's Google AI Overviews view for the last 7 days. Note your visibility and the rivals above you.
- Read the Overviews that named a rival and not you. Note the pages they cite.
- Pick one cited roundup page, and work for a place on it. From 3 to 30 October 2026, roundups took 119 of the 189 citations to our example question, 63%.
- Read the new queries in Search Console. A new query is a new prompt to track.
- Once a month, run the manual check on three questions, to see the Overview as a buyer sees it.
In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, the share of one day's Overviews that named the most-named rival moved between 26% and 47%. Our guide on why the numbers move measures how much one brand's answers changed between two days.
What to do next
- Run the manual check on three buyer questions, signed out, with your market set. Note the brands and the cited pages.
- If a rival appears and you do not, start a tracker with Google AI Overviews among its platforms. Our guide on how many prompts to track gives the count.
- Read the cited roundup pages first. From 3 to 30 October 2026, they took 119 of the 189 citations to our example question.
