TL;DR
The Google Search Central AI features guidance says a page needs no special markup, file or opt-in to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page qualifies when Google indexes it and can show a snippet of it. The usual SEO practices apply. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, our tracker read 11,080 citations in 1,302 AI Overviews. Pages that rank or compare products took 34% of them. The monitored brands’ own sites took 2.9%.
On this page
A marketing manager asks this after a consultant said AI Overviews need a new kind of page. This guide summarizes the page where Google states its own position, read on 30 October 2026. It sets that page against what our tracker records. For how the two Google features answer differently, read our guide on AI Mode versus AI Overviews.
What is the Google Search Central AI features guidance?
The Google Search Central AI features guidance is Google's documentation for site owners on AI Overviews and AI Mode. It is one page, "AI features and your website", which describes the features and the controls. Google last updated it on 10 December 2025. We read it on 30 October 2026. This guide summarizes it and copies no sentence.
The page makes one central claim. The SEO practices that apply to Search also apply to the AI features, and a page needs nothing new to appear in them. Google describes an AI Overview as a quick summary of a complex topic, with links for further reading. It shows one only when the summary adds value to the classic results. It describes AI Mode as the feature for questions that need exploration, reasoning or comparison. Both can run query fan-out: several related searches at once, whose results supply the links. Google states that the two features may use different models and techniques, so their answers and links can differ.
The AI platforms read this guidance too. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, ChatGPT ran 20 web searches that named Google Search Central before it answered our prompts. They used 7 wordings. The denominator is the 2,143 searches that ChatGPT and Grok reported in that window.
Does a page need special markup to appear in AI Overviews?
No. Google states that a page needs no new machine-readable file, AI text file or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. The AI features need no special schema.org type either.
Structured data keeps one rule. Google asks that it match the visible text of the page. The page does not name structured data as a way into the AI features.
How does a page qualify as a source?
A page qualifies when Google indexes it and may show a snippet of it in Search. Google names no further technical requirement for the AI features. It guarantees no crawling, indexing or serving, even for a page that meets every requirement. Its best practices are the SEO list:
- Allow Googlebot in robots.txt, and in the CDN or host in front of the site.
- Link the page from other pages of the site.
- Keep the important content as text, with images and video beside it.
- Give the page a good page experience.
- Keep the structured data equal to the visible text.
- Keep the Merchant Center feed and the Business Profile current.
Google adds that the AI features show a wider and more diverse set of links than the classic results. That is the one place where the page mentions sites other than your own.
How do you control what AI features show from your pages?
The robots.txt rules for Googlebot are the crawl control for Search, and the AI features are a part of Search. To limit what an AI feature shows from a page, Google names four controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet and noindex. A control takes effect after a recrawl, which Google says can take days to months. The URL Inspection tool shows the HTML that Googlebot received, and it can request a recrawl.
On 30 October 2026, our crawlability audit (the Crawlability page, read through get_crawlability) read the robots.txt of our site and of five monitored rivals. In that audit, all six sites allow Googlebot, each through one allow rule for every crawler. The same audit found no nosnippet span and no robots directive on our homepage. It found one nosnippet span on one rival's homepage. Our guide on AI crawler user agents holds the robots.txt line for each crawler, Google-Extended included.
What does the guidance not say?
The guidance names no opt-in, no AI-specific ranking signal and no position. It says nothing about brand mentions, sentiment or third-party pages. Our tracker fills that gap with what the AI features cite. Our project asks its questions about AI visibility tools on 7 AI platforms, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode among them. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, Google AI Overviews gave 11,080 citations in 1,302 answers. The table splits them by the kind of page.
| Kind of cited page | Citations in 28 days | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Roundup: a page that ranks or compares several products | 3,816 | 34% |
| Guide: a page that teaches | 2,470 | 22% |
| Vendor: a company's own page about itself | 2,260 | 20% |
| Community: a video, a forum thread or a social post | 2,218 | 20% |
| Directory and other | 316 | 3% |
The five monitored rivals' own sites took 317 of the 11,080 citations, 2.9%. In AI Mode, in the same 28 days, the same sites took 371 of 9,230 citations, 4.0%. Our own site took none in either feature. Google also cites itself. In the same 28 days, each feature cited the AI features page once.

What does Google say about AI traffic in Search Console?
Google states that clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode count in the Performance report of Search Console, under the Web search type. The page adds a claim about quality. It states that clicks from results with AI Overviews are of higher quality, and that those visitors tend to stay longer. We cannot check that claim from outside Google. Our guide on checking your brand in AI Overviews holds the manual check and what Search Console shows.
Search Console counts the clicks that reach your site. It does not list the pages that each answer cites. FullReach AI asks each question once a day on each platform, and it records every answer with the pages it cites.

What does this mean for a brand page?
A brand page is one source among several in each answer. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, an AI Overview carried 8.5 citations on average: 11,080 citations in 1,302 answers. Two consequences follow from the guidance and the table above:
- The page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Google names no other technical bar for the AI features.
- Roundups and guides took 57% of the AI Overviews citations in those 28 days. A brand's own page competes for a share of the 20% vendor slice. Our guide on getting mentioned in ChatGPT answers holds the four moves that follow, with one example each.

What to do next
- Check that Googlebot may crawl your key pages, and that each one shows a snippet in Search. The URL Inspection tool answers both.
- Read the roundups and guides that the AI features cite for your buyers' questions. Work to get your brand onto one.
- Keep your structured data equal to the visible text. Add no file or markup written for AI.
