Generative AI SEO tools: the three kinds, and which you need

TL;DR

Generative AI SEO tools are three kinds of product: content generators, AI-answer trackers and crawl tools. A content generator writes pages. A tracker asks AI platforms your buyers’ questions every day and stores the answers. A crawl tool checks that AI crawlers can read your pages. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, on AI visibility questions, answers gave five trackers 7.9% of citations and three content generators 1.1%. Check the crawlers once, measure with a tracker, then write.

A marketing manager who searches for generative AI SEO tools sees three kinds of product under one name. This guide defines the three kinds and measures which kind the AI answers cite. It names the tools of each kind, and it gives the order in which to buy them. For the difference between SEO and GEO as disciplines, read our guide on GEO, SEO and AEO. For SEO suites set against AI visibility tools, platform by platform, read our guide to SEO tools for generative search.

What are generative AI SEO tools?

Generative AI SEO tools are software for the search that AI platforms do when they answer a question. The name covers three kinds of product that do three different jobs.

KindWhat it doesWhat you getThe gap it closes

AI-answer trackerAsks AI platforms your buyers' questions on a schedule and stores each answer. Each stored answer, and the numbers counted from it.You do not know what the answers say about you.

Our guide on what GEO tools are names the five job families of the wider category.

Which kind do AI answers cite?

For questions about AI visibility tools, AI answers cite the trackers about seven times as often as the content generators. We measured our own project, which tracks that category. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, on 7 AI platforms, the sites of the five trackers it monitors held 3,930 citations. That is 7.9% of all citations in the window. In the same 28 days, three content generators stood among the 50 most cited domains, and together they held 567 citations, 1.1%.

The measurement has two limits. The project asks about AI visibility tools, so its answers favor tracker sites by construction. It counts all five monitored trackers, but only the generators among the 50 most cited domains.

The answers cite the two groups for different pages. We read the 20 most cited pages of each domain in the same 28 days. The 100 tracker pages drew 2,880 citations, and 2,417 of them, 84%, went to the tracker's own product pages. The 60 generator pages drew 532 citations, and 368 of them, 69%, went to roundup pages that list AI visibility tools. Only 121 went to the generator's own product pages. So the answers cite a tracker's site as a tool, and a content generator's site as a list of other tools.

Our guide on the alternatives to GEO tools holds the citations of the SEO suites and the searches that named one.

The platforms also search before they answer. In the same 28 days, Grok ran the search "best SEO tool for generative search 2026" 13 times. In a sample of 430 search wordings from ChatGPT and Grok, 25 contained "generative search", and they ran 116 times.

A content generator writes a page from a prompt, an outline or a keyword. It cannot tell you whether an AI platform names your brand, because it never asks one. In the same 28 days, these three generators drew the most citations among content generators. Their ranks among all cited domains were 22nd, 40th and 41st. For each, the share of its 20 most cited pages that were roundups:

  • scalenut.com: 238 citations in all. 138 of the 217 on its top pages went to roundups, 64%.
  • writesonic.com: 167 citations in all. 101 of the 161 on its top pages went to roundups, 63%.
  • frase.io: 162 citations in all. 129 of the 154 on its top pages went to roundups, 84%.

So roundups drew 63% to 84% of each generator's top-page citations. A tracker lists the pages the answers cite for your questions, and labels each page by its kind. Our guide on what GEO tools are states where our own domain ranks among the cited domains, and how many citations it holds.

What does an AI-answer tracker do?

An AI-answer tracker asks your questions on each AI platform every day, stores each answer and counts the brands and the pages in it. Our guide on what an AI visibility tool is defines the six numbers it reports and what it stores. By the project's competitor list on 30 October 2026, the five trackers it monitors are Peec AI, Profound, Otterly AI, Scrunch and AthenaHQ. Semrush AI Visibility is the AI search module of the Semrush SEO suite. It tracks custom prompts daily on ChatGPT Search, Google AI Mode and Gemini, alone or inside the Semrush One plans. Ahrefs Brand Radar is the AI visibility module of the Ahrefs SEO suite. It offers an index of about 450 million prompts, and custom prompts priced by the check on seven AI platforms, Claude among them. Our AI ranking tool checklist gives the twelve questions to ask a tracker before you buy.

What does a crawl tool do?

A crawl tool checks whether the crawlers of the AI platforms can read your pages, and counts their visits in your logs. In the same 28 days, Grok ran the search "how to check if AI crawlers can read my website" 11 times. In the sample of 430 search wordings, 19 contained the word crawler, and they ran 56 times. Our guide on checking that AI crawlers can read your website holds the check. Our guide on AI crawler user agents names the crawlers.

We hold no dated record of a standalone crawl tool. The trackers and the suites we compare do the job inside their plans, and each record states what its pages say:

Which kind do you need?

Three questions set the order: a crawl check once, then a tracker, then a content generator.

  1. Can the AI platforms read your site? If not, run the crawl check first.
  2. Do you know which pages the answers cite for your buyers' questions? If not, you need a tracker. It tells you whether the gap is a missing page, a weak page or a page nobody links.
  3. Does the tracker show a question with no page of yours behind it? Then write that page, with a content generator or by hand.

A team that already pays for an SEO suite can start with its module. Check that it runs your own prompts on the platforms your buyers use. Our guide to SEO tools for generative search shows which platforms each entry plan covers.

What to do next

  1. Run the crawl check on your home page and your three most important pages.
  2. Start a tracker on your buyers' questions. Our guide on how many prompts to track measures the count at which the number holds.
  3. Write the pages that no cited page of yours answers. Measure again after 28 days.

For how FullReach AI collects the answers, read the methodology.
