TL;DR
Generative engine optimization tools measure how AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answer the questions your buyers ask. They list what to change so the answers name your brand. We sort what they do into five jobs: tracking, citation analysis, crawlability, content and outreach. On 30 October 2026, our own worklist held 495 Actions from 7 AI platforms: 360 outreach, 134 content and 1 crawlability. Our team marked done the crawlability Action, a sitemap submission, on 13 October 2026.
On this page
In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, ChatGPT and Grok ran 430 web searches that contained the word GEO before answering our prompts. 53 of those searches began with the words "what are GEO tools". This guide defines the term, sets a GEO tool beside an SEO tool, and sorts what the tools do into five jobs. It ends with eight questions to ask before you buy. For the practice itself, read our guide on GEO vs SEO vs AEO, which lists the tactics that change and the ones that stay.
What are generative engine optimization tools?
Generative engine optimization tools measure how AI platforms answer your buyers' questions, and they list what to change so the answers name your brand. A generative engine is an AI platform that writes one answer instead of listing ten links. Generative engine optimization, GEO, is the work of changing what those engines read, so that their answers name, cite and recommend your brand.
The tools split that work in two. The measuring half asks the questions and stores the answers. The working half turns the stored answers into pages to publish, sites to contact and crawlers to admit. Our guide to GEO tools defines the tool in one paragraph and compares nine of them in one table. The measuring half alone is an AI visibility tool. Our guide on what an AI visibility tool is defines its six numbers and what it stores.
What does a GEO tool do that an SEO tool does not?
A GEO tool checks the AI crawlers, and it counts the competitors you name the same way as your brand.
| SEO tool | GEO tool | |
|---|---|---|
| The crawler it checks | Googlebot and Bingbot | The AI crawlers too, with the robots.txt rule that decides each one |
| Who it watches | Every page that ranks for the keyword | The competitors you name, counted the same way as your brand |
Our guide on GEO vs SEO vs AEO holds the other differences: citations over rankings, answers over clicks, and what to measure for each.
What are the five jobs of a GEO tool?
We sort what GEO tools do into five jobs: tracking, citation analysis, crawlability, content and outreach. The first job produces the answers, and the other four read them. The numbers below come from our own project, which tracks the AI visibility tools category in English on 7 AI platforms.
- Tracking asks each prompt on each platform every day and stores the answer. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, our tracking produced 4,395 losing answers: answers that named a monitored competitor and not our brand. Every other job starts from that set.
- Citation analysis labels each cited page by what a brand can do about it. The label decides the job that follows. A roundup, which ranks or lists several products, becomes an outreach Action. A competitor's own page becomes a content Action. Our guide on GEO vs SEO vs AEO holds every label and its share of citations.
- Crawlability audits each tracked website's robots.txt for the AI crawlers every day, and reads which pages the crawlers fetch. On 30 October 2026, our worklist held 1 crawlability Action, marked done on 13 October 2026. It asked us to submit the sitemap of fullreach.ai to Bing and Google, for the pages that no AI crawler fetched.
- Content names a page of your own to publish or to improve, with the question it would answer. On 30 October 2026, our worklist held 134 content Actions. 26 name a page to publish, 78 name a competitor's own page that the answers cite, and 19 answer an objection the answers raise. 5 answer what the answers cite a competitor's site for, and 6 ask for a video or a post on a publishing platform.
- Outreach names a third-party place where the losing answers read a competitor. Our worklist held 360 outreach Actions: 298 roundup listings, 33 press articles, 17 forum threads, 5 review sites and 2 directories with an application gate. The other 5 ask an author or a channel for a mention or a review.
The weekly list of the Actions page, on sample data. Each row is one outreach or content job, with the answers it targets and the platforms they came from.
The whole worklist held 495 Actions on 30 October 2026. A weekly list keeps eight of the 495, ordered by the losing answers each one targets that no row above it targets. The eight of the week of 26 October 2026 covered 1,043 of the 4,395 losing answers.
Do you need a free GEO tool or a paid one?
Start with a free check, and pay when you need the five jobs every day. Our guide on free GEO tools lists the four free checks, what each one tells you, and when the free route stops being enough. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, on 7 AI platforms, two rivals led the 4,395 losing answers of our own project. They appeared in 3,698 and 3,336 of them. Our free AI Visibility Checker asks your buyers' questions on 3 AI platforms, with no account.

What does a GEO tool cost?
A GEO tool costs its monthly plan, and the entry plans differ in the platforms their price includes. We read each rival's pricing page between 24 September 2026 and 13 October 2026. On those pages, 1 of the 8 rival entry plans in our roundup include all 7 AI platforms we measure in their price. Our guide on how AI visibility tools price names the units and prices every tool we compare. Our guide on the alternatives to GEO tools prices the four routes without a platform. FullReach AI costs 65€, 165€ and 360€ a month, billed yearly, for 50, 150 and 350 prompts, with every platform included.
The plan buys the daily run, and the daily run is what a free check lacks. The answers move from day to day. On 7 AI platforms, the most named rival's daily visibility was 37% on 5 October 2026 and 47% on 10 October 2026. Those were its lowest and highest days in the 28 days to 30 October 2026. The second most named rival stood at 29% on 29 October and at 42% on 30 October, one day later. A tool that asks every day reads both days, and a check on one of them reads one.

Which eight questions should you ask before you buy?
Ask these eight questions of every tool on your list. Each one has a yes or no answer that you can check in the trial.
- Which of the five jobs does the tool do itself, and which does it only describe?
- Does it ask each prompt in a fresh session, with no history, on every platform you need?
- Does it store every answer in full, and can you open the answer behind each number?
- Does it record the attempts that returned no answer, apart from the answers?
- Does each number name its denominator, and does it count your brand as it counts a competitor?
- Does it label each cited page by what you can do about it?
- Does it audit the AI crawlers on your robots.txt every day, and name the rule that decides?
- Does each suggested action name the losing answers it targets, and the evidence behind it?
Our guide to GEO tools lists the plan features to check beside these: platforms, markets, reports and access.
What to do next
- Ask three of your buyers' questions in ChatGPT, and note the brands and the pages each answer names.
- Decide which of the five jobs you need this quarter. Tracking comes first, because the other four read its answers.
- Start a tool on your prompts, and read its first weekly list before you report a number.
