TL;DR
An AI visibility tool asks AI platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your buyers ask. It stores every answer, and it counts how often the answers name your brand, recommend it and cite your pages. In 28 days, our own project stored 8,953 answers from 7 AI platforms. 54% of them named at least one of the six brands it monitors. You can check one question by hand in five minutes. A tool is for the questions you cannot read by hand every day.

This guide defines the term by what a tool must do before its number means anything. The example is our own project, with the numbers of its last 28 days. To compare tools, read the roundup next. For the wider category, read what a GEO tool is.
What is an AI visibility tool?
An AI visibility tool measures how often AI platforms name a brand when they answer the questions that its buyers ask. It does three things every day:
- It asks each question on each AI platform, in a fresh session, in each market you chose.
- It stores each answer in full: the text, the brands it names, the pages it cites, and the web searches the platform ran.
- It counts. The headline numbers are visibility, Share of Voice, sentiment and recommendation status.
It is not a rank tracker. A rank tracker records the position of your page in a list of ten links. An AI answer has no positions. It names some brands and leaves the rest out. It is not a social listening tool either. A social listening tool reads the public web and social posts. An AI answer is neither. It exists only in the session of the person who asked.
What does an AI visibility tool measure?
Every tool reports a few of these numbers. Ask what each one counts before you compare two tools. A brand counts when the text of an answer contains its name, or a spelling the tool knows for it.
| Number | The question it answers | How it is counted |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | How often does a buyer see the brand at all? | Answers that name the brand at least once, divided by all analysed answers. |
| Share of Voice | Of the brands you watch, how much of the attention goes to yours? | The brand's mentions, divided by the mentions of your brand and every monitored competitor. A brand counts once per answer, however often the answer repeats its name. |
| Sentiment | Does the answer speak well of the brand? | Each mention labelled positive, neutral or negative. |
| Recommendation status | Does the answer recommend the brand, name it, or warn against it? | Each mention labelled recommended, mentioned or advised against. |
| Sources | Which pages do the answers cite, and are yours among them? | Each cited URL, with its domain and the answer it came from. |
| Searches | What did the platform look up before it answered? | The web searches that ChatGPT and Grok report with an answer. |
Our guide on Share of Voice works through the first two numbers on a real example. The methodology states how FullReach AI assigns each label.

What does the tool store?
A number is only as good as the answers behind it, so a tool must store every answer and show it on demand. Our own project tracks the category we sell in, AI visibility tools, with 47 questions in English. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, 44 of them ran for the whole window, and three started during it. On 7 AI platforms in that window, it stored:
- 8,953 answers, 1,119 to 1,309 from each platform. That is about 320 a day.
- 4,697 attempts that returned no answer, because a platform refused the request or did not finish. The tool asks again, and it records each attempt. Otherwise a platform's failures look like a drop in your visibility.
- 49,698 citations of 9,797 pages on 3,406 domains. The most cited domain was youtube.com, with 2,498 citations.
- 6,923 web searches that ChatGPT and Grok ran before they answered, behind 2,002 answers.
4,792 of the answers, 54%, named at least one of the six brands the project monitors. Of the five rivals, the most named appeared in 41% of all answers, and the least named in 14%. Our own brand appeared in 14 answers, 0.2%. The tool counts every brand the same way, our own included.
Which AI platforms does it cover?
Check which platforms a tool asks, because the same question gets different answers on each one. FullReach AI asks 7: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Mode, Google AI Overviews and Grok. In our 28 days, Google AI Overviews gave 11,080 citations and Gemini gave 4,089, from about 1,300 answers each to the same questions. Grok named one of the six monitored brands in 61% of its answers, and Perplexity in 39%. Our guide on ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity reads the three apart.
Can you check AI visibility by hand?
Yes, for one question. Do it once, and you know what the tool automates:
- Open ChatGPT in a private window, signed out, so no history shapes the answer.
- Ask one question a buyer asks, without your brand name in it. For example: "Which tools track a brand in ChatGPT?"
- Note each brand the answer names, in order, and whether the answer recommends one.
- Open each source link and note the domain.
- Ask the same question on Gemini and on Perplexity. The three answers will differ.
The check takes about five minutes. It gives you no trend, because an answer changes from one day to the next. In our guide on why the numbers move, 8% of one brand's answers changed between two days. The check also does not scale. Our project collects about 320 answers a day. At one minute per answer, reading them takes more than five hours, every day.
Run the check on your own website, with ten questions at once.

When do you need a tool?
You need a tool when one of these is true:
- You report the number to somebody: a manager, a board, a client. A report needs the same count every month, from stored answers.
- You track more than ten questions, more than one platform, or more than one market.
- You want a trend. A trend needs the same question asked every day, with every answer kept.
- You want to know why. The reason sits in the cited pages, and a tool lists them for every answer.
You do not need a tool to learn whether AI answers name you at all. The manual check tells you that in five minutes. Our guide for small businesses covers the smallest plans. Our guide for agencies covers a project per client and the client report.
What does an AI visibility tool cost?
The tools sell prompts, credits or checks, and some charge a monthly fee for each further platform. Our pricing guide prices every plan we compare for ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity together. FullReach AI costs 65€, 165€ and 360€ a month, billed yearly, for 50, 150 and 350 prompts, with every platform included.

What to do next
- Run the manual check on three questions. Write down the brands and the sources.
- Decide what you need: a yes or no, or a trend that you report.
- For a trend, start a tool on 25 to 50 questions. Our guide on how many prompts to track explains the count.
