TL;DR
To track your brand in Perplexity AI, ask your buyers' questions on Perplexity every day. Store each answer with its cited pages, and count the brands it names. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, our own project stored 1,303 Perplexity answers, and 97% of them cited at least one page. Perplexity cites fewer pages than ChatGPT. On one question asked daily in that window, it cited 1.8 pages per answer, and ChatGPT 10.5.
On this page
Perplexity lists the pages it cites under each answer, so a marketer asks whether its own pages are among them. This guide measures Perplexity on our own project and sets it beside ChatGPT, on the same questions and the same days. For the manual check and its three traps, read our guide on brand mentions in ChatGPT. For the tools that cover ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity at once, read our guide on the three platforms.
How do you track a brand in Perplexity AI?
You track a brand in Perplexity AI when you ask the same buyer questions on Perplexity every day. You store each answer with its cited pages, and you count. Three parts make the number:
- The questions. Write what a buyer asks, without your brand name in it. Our guide on which prompts to track explains the choice.
- The answers. Keep the text, the brands it names and the pages it cites, every day.
- The counts. Visibility, Share of Voice, sentiment, recommendation status, and the citations of your own site. Our guide on what an AI visibility tool is defines each one.
The rest of this guide gives the Perplexity numbers of our own project. It tracks the category we sell in, AI visibility tools, on 7 AI platforms.
How does Perplexity cite its sources?
Perplexity cited pages in 97% of its answers in the 28 days to 30 October 2026, and roundups took the largest share. In that window, our project stored 1,303 Perplexity answers. 1,258 of them cited at least one page. Together they cited 942 pages on 507 domains, 4,713 citations in all. That is 3.6 citations per answer.
The 50 most cited domains took 60% of the citations. The five most cited were semrush.com with 321, seranking.com with 178, hubspot.com with 173, tryprofound.com with 130 and otterly.ai with 108. For those 50 domains, the project lists 318 pages with 2,805 citations. Roundups took 46% of them, vendors' own pages 36% and guides 14%. Directories, forums and videos shared the rest.
Perplexity does not report the web searches behind an answer. Only ChatGPT and Grok do. So the cited pages are the only trace of how Perplexity chose its sources, and a tool must store every one of them.
Cited domains
The All Sources page, on sample data, filtered to one platform: each cited domain, its citations and its share. The brand's own site sits in its place.
Why does ChatGPT count more citations than Perplexity?
Part of the gap comes from image files: ChatGPT places image files from openai.com in its answers, and each one counts as a citation. Our guide on which AI search engines matter holds the citation rate of both platforms and five more. Without the image files, ChatGPT still cited 7.1 pages per answer in the 28 days to 30 October 2026. That is about twice the Perplexity rate of 3.6 in the same window. The next section shows a second cause on one question: ChatGPT links the home page of each tool it names.
What does the same question look like on both platforms?
On average, the same question got a shorter source list on Perplexity than on ChatGPT. We read the 28 answers to "What is the best AI visibility tool?" on each platform, from 3 to 30 October 2026.
- Perplexity cited 49 pages in 28 answers, 1.8 per answer. 26 answers named at least one monitored tool, 45 mentions in all.
- ChatGPT cited 295 pages in 28 answers, 10.5 per answer. All 28 answers named a monitored tool, 89 mentions in all.
The Perplexity answer also changed from day to day. It named 0 to 4 monitored tools on a day, and it cited 0 to 5 pages.
On 30 October 2026, both platforms named five tools. Perplexity cited four pages: three roundups and one vendor's free checker. ChatGPT cited 14 URLs: four roundups, the five tools' own home pages and five image files. ChatGPT also reported the two web searches it ran first. Perplexity reported none.
In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, ChatGPT cited fullreach.ai 42 times and named our brand in 13 of its 1,307 answers. Perplexity did neither.
Can you check Perplexity by hand?
Yes, for one question a day, with the steps of our guide on brand mentions in ChatGPT. That guide also lists the three traps of a manual check. On Perplexity, note the numbered sources under the answer, because Perplexity reports no web searches. One answer a day shows no trend, as the daily range in the section above shows.
