How to track brand mentions in ChatGPT: three methods

TL;DR

The best tool to track brand mentions in ChatGPT asks your buyers' questions on ChatGPT every day and stores every answer. A manual check sees one answer, shaped by your account's memory, your location and your wording. A script on the API sees no web search and no citation unless it adds them. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, ChatGPT reported its web searches with 53% of the 1,307 answers it gave our own project. A tool records those searches.

A marketing manager asks this question after ChatGPT named three rivals and not the brand. This guide covers the three ways to track brand mentions in ChatGPT: by hand, through the API, and with a tool. It states what each method sees and what it misses, with the numbers of our own project. The hours of the manual route, and the sheet it needs, are in our guide on the tool or the manual check. For Gemini and Perplexity beside ChatGPT, read our guide on the three platforms.

By hand, by script or by tool: what is the best tool to track brand mentions in ChatGPT?

The best tool to track brand mentions in ChatGPT asks your buyers' questions on ChatGPT every day, in a fresh session, and stores every answer. A brand mention in ChatGPT is one answer whose text names the brand. A tool counts it once per answer, however often the answer repeats the name. The three methods below all find mentions. They differ in what else they keep.

MethodWhat it gives youWhat it missesWhat it costs
By handOne answer today, with its brands and its source links. The trend, the searches behind the answer, and every day you do not check.Minutes per prompt, every time.
A script on the APIThe answers it requests, stored as text. The web search, the location and the citations, unless the script adds them.Developer time, and a fee per request.
A toolEvery answer every day, with its brands, citations and searches, counted.Any question that is not in its prompt set.A monthly plan, priced by prompts.

We ask ChatGPT this guide's question for our own project, once a day. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, it answered 28 times, and no attempt failed. Every answer named at least one of the five AI visibility tools we monitor. 21 answers named three of them. The five answers of 3 to 7 October named one monitored tool each. Before those five answers, ChatGPT searched the sites of three social listening tools, five times each. The answer of 3 October named a social listening tool first. It cited four pages, and three of them sat on that tool's site. Our guide on brand monitoring and AI answer tracking explains why those tools cannot see inside ChatGPT.

Grok also reports the web searches it runs before it answers. In the same 28 days, it searched "best tool to track brand mentions in ChatGPT" 11 times, and the plural wording 10 times.

How do you check ChatGPT by hand, and what are the three traps?

You check ChatGPT by hand when you ask one buyer question in a private, signed-out window and note the brands and sources. Our guide on what an AI visibility tool is lists the five steps. Three traps can make a signed-in check differ from the answer a buyer gets.

  • Memory and history. A signed-in account can hold facts from your earlier chats, and your questions about your own brand. We do not measure how much they change an answer, so the safe check holds none.
  • Location. Our project asks each prompt from one fixed market, so the place stays the same every day. A check from your office asks from your office's place.
  • Wording. A question that names your brand gets an answer about your brand. A buyer asks about a category, so the check must not name you.

A private, signed-out window removes the first trap. A question without your brand name removes the third. Neither fixes the place, and neither fixes a fourth problem: one answer is one day. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, the most-named rival appeared in 38% of ChatGPT's answers on one day and in 57% on another. Our own brand appeared in no ChatGPT answer on 15 of those days, and in one answer on each of the other 13. A single check lands on one of those days. Our guide on why the numbers move measures that movement on every platform.

Why does the ChatGPT API answer differently from the app?

The API returns the model's answer to your request alone, and the app adds a layer that your request does not carry. To match the app, a script adds three things: the web search, its citations and a buyer's location. Our guide on the tool or the manual check counts how often a script must ask again after a failure.

The app route is what a tool records, and the numbers show how much of an answer that layer is. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, ChatGPT gave our project 1,307 answers, and 11 attempts returned none. It reported its web searches with 696 of those answers, 53%, in 1,158 distinct wordings. 1,254 of the answers, 96%, cited at least one page: 10,452 citations of 2,674 pages on 923 domains. The most cited domain was openai.com, with 1,180 citations. A script that skips the web search stores none of the searches and none of the citations.

Which tools track brand mentions in ChatGPT, and what do they cost?

The price of one prompt on ChatGPT is the number to compare. The table prices every plan with only ChatGPT ticked. Tick the other platforms you need to see what each one adds to the price. FullReach AI is our own product, and it comes first. Our guide on the three platforms compares what each tool records about an answer.

The table opens with ChatGPT selected. Change the selection to the platforms you need. Prices are monthly, on monthly billing, for one market. A market is a country, or Worldwide. On FullReach AI, a prompt counts once for each market it runs in. Other tools can count markets differently. Each rival price comes from the pricing pages in its entry, read on the date in its row. Ahrefs sells checks: one prompt, asked once, on one platform. Each of its rows uses the cheapest package for that many prompts on the platforms here, and extra checks cost extra. AthenaHQ and Rankscale sell credits, so their entries state their prices instead.

A tool that tracks only ChatGPT leaves the other platforms to the manual route. Our guides on Gemini and Perplexity read those two apart. ChatGPT gave 1,307 of the 8,953 answers our project stored on 7 AI platforms in the same 28 days, 15%. FullReach AI costs 65€, 165€ and 360€ a month, billed yearly, for 50, 150 and 350 prompts, with every platform included.

What does a weekly check of ChatGPT look like?

A weekly check reads what changed, not every answer. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, our project asked ChatGPT 47 prompts, each once a day. 44 of them ran on all 28 days, and 3 started on 6 October. A week then adds about 330 ChatGPT answers. Read four things:

  1. Compare the week's visibility per prompt with the week before.
  2. Open the answers that stopped naming you, or that started to recommend a rival.
  3. Read the pages ChatGPT cited for the first time. Note each roundup or directory that lists rivals and not you.
  4. Read the searches that name a rival. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, ChatGPT's searches named one of our five rivals 939 times, and our brand 0 times.

Our guide on which prompts to track explains how to turn those searches into prompts.

What to do next

  1. Run the manual check on three buyer questions, in a private window. Note the brands and the domains.
  2. Decide whether you need today's answer or a weekly count. Our guide on how many prompts to track sizes the set for a count.
  3. Each week, read the ChatGPT searches that name a rival. Write the page that each one looks for.

For how FullReach AI collects the answers, read the methodology.
