Brand monitoring vs AI answer tracking: two different jobs

TL;DR

Brand24, Mention, Brandwatch and Talkwalker list public posts and pages that name a brand. Their pages, read on 30 October 2026, name no AI platform among their sources. An AI answer tracker asks ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity your buyers' questions and stores each answer. On the Brand24 ChatGPT question, ChatGPT itself splits. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, it answered our tracking question 28 times. Two answers picked Brand24 first. Three opened by advising a dedicated AI tracker over a social listening tool.

On this page

A marketing manager asks this question with a brand monitoring subscription already paid. The tool lists posts and articles that name the brand, and the manager wants to know whether it also reads ChatGPT. This guide sets the two categories side by side. It covers what each one reads, what each page states about AI answers, and when a team needs both. For the manual check of ChatGPT and its traps, read how to track brand mentions in ChatGPT. For the category and its six numbers, read what an AI visibility tool is.

Does Brand24 ChatGPT tracking exist?

The Brand24 homepage, read on 30 October 2026, links a product named AI Visibility and does not describe it. This guide states nothing about that product beyond its name. The same page names the sources Brand24 monitors: nine social, video and audio networks, podcasts, news, blogs, forums and review sites. It counts 25 million online sources, and it names no AI platform among them.

ChatGPT itself gives two kinds of advice on this question. Our own project asks it once a day for the best tool to track brand mentions in ChatGPT. In the 28 days to 30 October 2026, ChatGPT answered 28 times. The answers of 3 and 5 October picked Brand24 first. The answers of 4, 6 and 7 October opened by advising a dedicated AI visibility tracker over a traditional social listening tool.

The answer of 4 October shows both positions at once. It advised a dedicated tracker, and then named Brand24 the best starting point for AI visibility and brand monitoring together. It called Mention and Brandwatch tools for finding people who talk about a brand, which it set apart from measuring what ChatGPT says. Three of its five citations sat on brand24.com. Our guide on tracking brand mentions in ChatGPT holds the web searches behind those five answers, and the pages they cited.

What does a brand monitoring tool track?

A brand monitoring tool reads public posts and pages as they appear, and lists every one that names a brand. The category is also called social listening or media monitoring. Each tool states its sources on its own site, so we read one public page of each on 30 October 2026. The table states what each page names, and nothing more.

ToolSources its page namesWhat the page says about AI answersPage read on 30 October 2026
Brand24Social and video networks, podcasts, news, blogs, forums, review sites and app stores, from 25 million online sourcesNo AI platform. A link to a product named AI Visibility, with no description.Homepage
MentionSocial media and the web, from 1 billion sources, with up to two years of historyNo AI platform.Homepage
BrandwatchOver 100 million online sources, 1.4 trillion posts since 2008, and a customer's own uploaded dataNo AI platform. Its menu names GenAI Monitoring as a separate product, with no description.Consumer Research product page
TalkwalkerSocial and digital channels, in general words. Its text names no single network.AI channels, in general words. No AI platform by name.Homepage

Every row describes one job: find the people who talk about the brand, and answer them. A post, an article or a review is public, so a crawler can read it. Three of the four pages name an AI product or AI channels. None of the four pages we read describes how that product records an answer from ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. Read the AI product's own page before you count on it.

What does AI answer tracking record?

AI answer tracking asks AI platforms your buyers' questions on a schedule. It stores each answer with the brands it names and the pages it cites. The difference from monitoring is who asks. A monitoring tool reads what other people publish. A tracker asks the question itself, in each market, and keeps the answer it gets. The answer of 4 October is one such record, stored with its full text, its four web searches and its five citations. Our guide on what an AI visibility tool is defines the six numbers a tracker counts from those answers.

Share of Voice across the monitored brands, on sample data. Each bar counts brand mentions inside the AI answers the tracker stored.

The figure shows a piece of the tracker's Overview. Each bar is one brand's share of all the brand mentions in the stored answers. A brand monitoring report counts posts and articles instead, so its share and this share measure different things. Our guide on Perplexity shows how one platform picks the sources behind its answers.

When does a team need both tools?

A team needs both tools when it answers people who talk about the brand, and sells to people who ask an AI platform. The table maps six common questions to the tool that answers each one. The brand monitoring column states only what the four pages we read describe.

QuestionBrand monitoring, on the pages we readAI answer tracking
Who posted about us today, and where?YesNo
Did a customer or a journalist complain in public?YesNo
Does ChatGPT name us when a buyer asks for a tool like ours? Not describedYes
Which rivals does Gemini recommend instead of us?Not describedYes
Which pages do the answers cite, and are ours among them? Not describedYes
What did the platform search before it answered? Not describedYes

The two jobs meet at the cited pages. A review site, a forum thread or a news article that an AI answer cites is also a public page. A brand monitoring tool lists that page when it names the brand. The AI answer tracker shows which of those pages the platforms cite, and how often.

A team that wants no second tool yet can read AI answers by hand. Our guide on the tool or the manual check counts the hours that a manual check takes each week.

What does the second tool cost?

An AI answer tracker sells prompts: the questions it asks every day, each in one or more markets. Our pricing guide compares the price of one prompt across the trackers. FullReach AI costs 65€, 165€ and 360€ a month, billed yearly, for 50, 150 and 350 prompts, with every platform included. The brand monitoring subscription stays as it is, because the tracker reads none of its sources.
